“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a
Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him…the
Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of
might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord.”
Isaiah 11:1-2

Life is interesting. It is rarely without surprise. There are inevitably
good times as well as bad. In the good times life seems easy. In
the bad, we cling to whatever we might be able to draw a bit of
hope from. Ultimately, our one true source of hope is Jesus. Isaiah
the prophet reminds us of this in Isaiah 11. In the previous chapter,
Isaiah describes the Lord disciplining his people by cutting them
down like trees leaving nothing but a stump. But, from that stump
would spring forth new life. That new life is Jesus, the Branch
bearing fruit. You see, when life seems to have lost all hope, we can
take comfort in knowing that Jesus paid the ransom for our lives so
that we might spend eternity in Heaven. As we enter this Christmas
season, take comfort in knowing that Jesus has conquered all. We
have hope in our Savior who IS wisdom, understanding, counsel,
and might. Put your hope in Him and you too will bear fruit.

Dear Father, as we draw near the time we celebrate the birth of
Jesus, help us to pause with thanksgiving. We know that times of
turmoil will surely come, but they are no match for the hope we
have in your Son. You are the source of our strength. Enable us to
recognize opportunities to share that hope with those who don’t
know you. Equip us with the characteristics of the Spirit so that we
may bring glory to your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
