“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” 1 John 3:1

This verse brings to mind a Dottie Rambo song from my childhood:

“I am adopted; I’m a special kid, you see. I’m proud to be a member of the royal family. My Father owns a Kingdom, and He sits upon His throne. He gives me everything I need. It’s nice to just belong.”

Adopted…by a king! Imagine that! Imagine the excitement of the orphan without home or family when he hears that, against all odds, he is to be adopted by the king himself! Imagine the moment he steps into the palace and lays eyes on the wonders it holds! Imagine his disbelief when he is awakened from what must surely be only a dream by the sound of the king’s deep, kind voice saying, “Welcome home, my son.”

1 John 3:1 tells us that we don’t have to imagine a scene like this. We, who were once orphans, separated from God because of our sin, have been invited to join the family of the King of Kings! By accepting Jesus’ free gift of salvation through his death on the cross, we can become part of the royal family, with all the rights and privileges that come with the title “Child of the King.” He says to us, “Everything I have is yours. What do you need? Forgiveness? Done! Grace? Mine is sufficient for you! Help in time of trouble? I command an army of angels concerning you! Peace? I can offer my peace that passes understanding! Joy? I have an abundant supply! Wisdom? You only need to ask! You are now my child, and you will never lack for anything!” He loves you that much, too. If you haven’t accepted His gift of salvation, make today your adoption day by trusting in Him, and celebrate this Christmas Season as a part of the family of God! Friend, you are so very LOVED by the King of Kings!

Father, thank you for loving us in spite of our sin. Thank you for adopting us into your Kingdom and promising us an eternity with You. Grant us courage to live as sons and daughters of the King, striving daily to add brothers and sisters to our family by sharing your great love with those around us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
