“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

My seven month old often screams in distress when she’s overly tired. I take the hint from her and gently rock her to sleep. A good night’s sleep really does a body good, doesn’t it? Sometimes my soul feels like screaming in distress when it’s weary too. I feel weighed down, anxious, and heavy. Just like I know what’s wrong with my foster daughter, and I help ease her burden, Jesus also knows what the “cure” is for us. He makes our burdens easy. He brings us peace. Do you remember the story of Peter walking on water? When Peter keeps his eyes focused on Jesus, he stays on top of the water. As soon as Peter looks at the waves around him, though, he immediately sinks. If we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and not our circumstances, we receive an unexplainable, abundant peace. So how do we keep our eyes focused on Jesus? The Message version of the scripture puts Matthew 11:30 another way: “Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Keeping company with Jesus is the key! Talk to him daily, read His word, and listen to His responses to you. This is where we find peace. So no matter what heavy burden you are carrying right now, look to Jesus.

Lord, help me to keep my focus on you. Bring relief to my soul when I walk through stressful and tough seasons in life. I know you are the source of my unexplainable peace. Thank you, Lord, for carrying my burdens. Amen.
